10 Things to Do in London this Spring

Spring is a season of renewal and possibility, and there is no shortage of experiences to savour across London and beyond this Spring. Carefully selected with the older adult in mind, these experiences reflect the richness of later life - offering culture, connection and thoughtful enjoyment at a pace that feels just right. Whether your passion lies in the arts, music, food or nature, the coming months bring a wealth of rewarding moments to look forward to.

From rare behind-the-scenes access at the Royal Opera House to dementia-friendly workshops at some of the capital's most beloved cultural institutions, there is something for everyone. At KYN, we believe that later life should be lived with curiosity, joy and enthusiasm, and we hope to inspire everyone to embrace all that this season has to offer. Here are ten wonderful things to explore this spring.

1. The Royal Opera House: Insights Series

Gain an inside perspective on the Royal Ballet as dancers and coaches rehearse works for the upcoming season. These performances are just one strand of the Royal Opera House's 'Insights' series, which also features orchestral rehearsals, cast and creative discussions, and conversations with leading conductors and musicians. Tickets are available for dates until May.

2. Rose Wiley at the Royal Academy

Until 19th April, the Royal Academy celebrates the work of Rose Wiley — an artist who did not begin her painting career until her 50s, and who will be exhibiting both well-known and new works in her 92nd year. Images featuring powerful women, including Elizabeth I and Serena Williams, sit alongside references to the artist's own experiences, such as living through the Blitz as a young girl.

3. Create Your Own Signature Colour at Code8 Beauty

Unable to find the right shade, or still pining after that discontinued lipstick? Code8 Beauty in Mayfair has the answer. A dedicated colour master will lead you through the creation of your own signature colour, and they keep the formula on file for whenever you need a refill.

4. Dementia-Friendly Workshops at the Wallace Collection

The Wallace Collection runs a fantastic series of dementia-friendly art appreciation and creative workshops. On 24th March, discover the secrets of Sèvres porcelain and decorate your own spring-inspired ceramics with the help of artist Christine Covill.

5. Dementia-Friendly Tours at the V&A

Furniture more your thing? The V&A will be running dementia-friendly tours of their collection throughout March and April.

6. Handel's Heroines at the Foundling Museum

This spring, London's cultural calendar offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy live performance and explore the latest research into the effects of music on the mind. Join Lucy Crowe OBE and harpsichordist Bridget Cunningham as they present Handel's Heroines (featuring music from the operas Rodelinda, Cesare and Semele) in the beautiful surroundings of the Picture Gallery at the Foundling Museum on 24th April.

7. Where Does Music Live in the Mind? at Gresham College

For something more cerebral, join Professor Milton Mermikides and explore Where Does Music Live in the Mind? on 15th April at Gresham College.

8. Ikebana and Sakura Cocktails at Jeraboam's

Embrace spring and enjoy a sakura-themed cocktail while you learn the art of Ikebana — the centuries-old Japanese flower arranging practice. This event is led by Beyond the Bouquet at Jeraboam's on the King's Road on 29th March.

9. Stores Collection Tour at Royal Museums Greenwich

Get exclusive access to some of the 2.5 million treasures held by the Royal Museums Greenwich in a stores collection tour of the Prince Philip Maritime Collections Centre on 7th March. Come face-to-face with intriguing stories relating to the Titanic, Antarctic expeditions and naval battles.

10. Oyster Masterclass at Bentley's Oyster Bar

Want to know the difference between a Pacific and a Kumamoto? The experts at Bentley's Oyster Bar run a weekly Oyster Masterclass, offering an education in the history of the UK and Ireland's oysters, with expertise in shucking and pairing — and plenty to sample throughout. Join the next session on 25th April.
