The Crack’d Visage
Friday, 10 April 2026
4.00 PMWe are delighted to welcome Sarah Cove ACR, one of Britain’s leading painting conservators, technical art historians and international lecturers. With more than 35 years of specialist experience working across heritage, museum and private collections, Sarah is renowned for her expertise in British portraiture from the 16th to the 20th century, as well as for founding the acclaimed Constable Research Project in 1986 - a project that established her as the foremost authority on John Constable’s painting materials and techniques.
Sarah trained at the Courtauld Institute of Art, followed by internships at both the V&A and the National Portrait Gallery, and has since appeared widely on the BBC - including Fake or Fortune? - sharing discoveries of previously unknown works.
In this illustrated talk, “The Crack’d Visage: The Conservation and Restoration of British Portraits, c.1530-1960,” Sarah will take guests behind the scenes of her studio to explore the evolving materials, techniques, and challenges of conserving British portraiture across five centuries.
