Post & Pre-Amputation Care in London
Living well after an amputation takes more than medical attention. It calls for round-the-clock nursing, warm encouragement, and a home that makes every day easier – from accessible ensuite bedrooms to menus tailored to each resident's health.
At KYN, we provide residential and nursing care for amputees in our luxury care homes in London. Whether recovering from recent amputation surgery or living with limb loss for years, our teams take the time to get to know what matters most and build care around it.

What does amputation care at KYN include?
No two residents experience limb loss in the same way. Someone recuperating after surgery needs very different support from someone who has lived confidently with a wheelchair or prosthesis for a decade, so everything starts with a thoughtful, in-depth assessment of each resident's health, abilities and routines.
From there, our nursing teams provide:
- Residual limb and wound care – regular dressing changes, skin checks and infection prevention, during healing and beyond.
- Pain management – including phantom limb pain, which many amputees experience and which deserves to be taken seriously, never dismissed.
- Pressure care – careful positioning and pressure relief to protect the skin of residents who spend longer periods seated or in bed.
- Safe moving and transfers – unhurried help in and out of bed, chairs and wheelchairs, whenever it is needed.
- Support with prosthetic use – help putting on, removing and caring for your prosthesis, and encouragement to build confidence with it day by day.
This care continues day and night. And at KYN, the same familiar faces look after residents each day – household leads, nurses and support teams who come to know each resident's preferences as well as their care needs.
When is a care home the right choice after an amputation?
NHS amputee rehabilitation services do excellent work, but inpatient programmes last a matter of weeks, and not everyone feels ready to manage at home when they end. Stairs, bathrooms and kitchens can become obstacles overnight. Families often step in with love, then find the level of care involved is more than they can sustain.
A care home closes that gap. For some residents, a stay of a few weeks of convalescent care is enough to rebuild strength before returning home. For others, particularly older amputees managing diabetes or vascular disease alongside limb loss, a permanent home with nursing care always on hand protects independence rather than taking it away.
How do we support amputee rehabilitation and recovery?
We work alongside your clinical team, never in place of it. Residents attending NHS or private limb centres as outpatients – for prosthetic fitting, adjustments or a rehabilitation programme – continue to do so, and we plan care around those appointments.
Within our homes, physiotherapists and occupational therapists help residents rebuild strength, balance and confidence. If another therapist would help – speech and language support, for example – we happily arrange that too. For some, the goal is walking with an artificial limb. For others, it is transferring independently from a wheelchair, or simply moving with less pain. Whatever the goal, progress is reviewed warmly and regularly with residents, and with family whenever they wish.
What is life at KYN like with limb loss?
Losing a limb can shake a person's confidence long after the wound has healed. Our homes are designed to restore it. Beautiful communal spaces and gardens draw residents out of their rooms; a full programme of enrichment activities gives each day shape; and our dining and nutrition team prepares menus tailored to individual dietary and health needs.
There is no institutional feel here, and no assumption about what you can or cannot do. Just quality of life, supported by people who know you.

Amputation Care Homes FAQs
-
Do KYN homes provide prosthetic fitting?
No. Prostheses are fitted and adjusted by specialist prosthetists at NHS limb centres and private prosthetic clinics. What we provide is everything around that: caring for the residual limb, helping residents practise safely, and planning care around fitting appointments. Not every amputee uses a prosthesis, and our care is just as complete without one.
-
Can you care for wheelchair users and double amputees?
Yes. Our nursing teams support residents with significant mobility needs, including those who do not use a prosthesis. Before moving into KYN, we carry out a detailed assessment, so residents and thier loved pnes can be confident about exactly what care will involve before moving in.
-
How much does amputation care in London cost?
Fees reflect the level of nursing care you need and the home and room you choose, so we prefer to discuss them openly rather than quote a single figure. Contact us and we will explain exactly what is included, so you can compare your options with confidence.
-
Can we try KYN before making a long-term decision?
Yes, and we would encourage it. A short respite care stay lets you experience the care, the dining and the atmosphere of a KYN home with no ongoing commitment. Many families find it answers questions no brochure ever could.
