Specialist Residential Care for People Living with Multiple Sclerosis

A diagnosis of multiple sclerosis changes so much — but it need not diminish the richness of daily life. At KYN, we provide compassionate, expert residential care for people living with MS at every stage of the condition, in homes designed to feel as warm and welcoming as your own.

We understand that MS affects every individual differently. That is why our approach begins not with the condition, but with the person. Before a resident joins us, we take the time to learn who they are — their history, their personality, their preferences and their needs. From there, we build a bespoke care plan delivered by a dedicated support team who provide consistency, reassurance and connection.

If you or someone you love is living with multiple sclerosis and considering residential care, we warmly invite you to get in touch. We are here to listen, to guide and to help you make the right decision with confidence.

What Is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis is a lifelong neurological condition that affects the brain and spinal cord. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering around nerve fibres, called myelin, disrupting the messages that travel between the brain and the rest of the body.

The symptoms of MS vary widely from person to person and may include fatigue, difficulties with mobility and balance, muscle stiffness or spasms, problems with vision, pain, and changes in memory or concentration. For many people symptoms fluctuate, while for others the condition follows a more gradual progression.

MS is most commonly diagnosed in people between the ages of 20 and 50 and is more prevalent in women than men. While there is currently no cure, advances in treatment and care have significantly improved quality of life for those living with the condition.

What Are the Different Stages and Types of MS?

Understanding the type and stage of multiple sclerosis is important when considering care needs, as the level of support required can vary significantly. There are three main types of MS, each with its own pattern of progression.

Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS)

This is the most common form of MS. Relapsing-remitting MS is characterised by periods of new or worsening symptoms (relapses) followed by periods of partial or complete recovery (remissions). During remission, the condition may appear stable, though underlying nerve damage can still occur. Many people with RRMS live independently for years, but over time, some may find that relapses become more frequent or that recovery between episodes is less complete, prompting a need for additional support.

Secondary Progressive MS (SPMS)

For many people initially diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS, the condition eventually transitions into secondary progressive MS. In this stage, symptoms begin to worsen more steadily, with or without relapses. Mobility may become more significantly affected, fatigue can deepen, and cognitive changes may become more noticeable.

Primary Progressive MS (PPMS)

Primary progressive MS affects around 10 to 15% of people with the condition. Rather than experiencing relapses and remissions, individuals with PPMS notice a gradual and continuous worsening of symptoms from the outset. Mobility difficulties tend to emerge earlier, and the need for specialist care and daily assistance may develop more quickly.

How Symptoms May Change Over Time

Regardless of the type of MS, the condition is progressive in nature. Early stages may involve manageable symptoms such as intermittent fatigue or tingling sensations, while later stages can bring more complex challenges including significant mobility difficulties, chronic pain, swallowing problems, bladder and bowel changes, and increasing reliance on support for daily activities.

At KYN, we are equipped and prepared to provide attentive, expert care through every transition — adapting each resident's care plan as their needs evolve.

How Does KYN Support People Living with Multiple Sclerosis?

At KYN, to care for someone is to honour them as a whole person — not to define them by their diagnosis. Our MS care is holistic, personalised and delivered with the warmth and attentiveness that defines everything we do.

Bespoke, Person-Centred Care Plans

Every resident receives a care plan tailored entirely to their individual needs, abilities and preferences. We take a 360-degree approach to wellbeing, considering physical health, emotional needs, cognitive stimulation, nutrition and social connection. As MS progresses and needs change, care plans are reviewed and adapted in close collaboration with each resident, their family and our clinical teams.

Round-the-Clock Nursing and Clinical Support

Our in-house teams of nurses and carers provide support around the clock, ensuring that residents feel safe and looked after at every hour of the day and night. We work alongside visiting GPs and multi-disciplinary professionals, including physiotherapists and occupational therapists, to deliver a coordinated and responsive approach to each resident's health and mobility.

Specialist Symptom Management

Living with MS often means managing a complex and shifting set of symptoms. Our experienced teams are trained to support residents with:

  • Mobility and physical therapy. Physiotherapy programmes are designed to maintain strength, flexibility and balance for as long as possible, helping residents retain independence and confidence in their movement.
  • Pain and spasticity management. Working closely with clinical professionals, we help manage muscle stiffness, spasms and chronic pain through a combination of therapeutic interventions, positioning support and appropriate equipment.
  • Fatigue management. MS-related fatigue is one of the most common and debilitating symptoms. Our teams work sensitively with residents to plan activities and rest periods that respect their energy levels while keeping daily life engaging and fulfilling.
  • Cognitive and emotional wellbeing. Changes in memory, concentration and mood are common in MS. Our life enrichment programme provides meaningful activities that stimulate the mind, while our compassionate teams offer emotional support and reassurance every day.
  • Continence and swallowing support. For residents experiencing bladder, bowel or swallowing difficulties, our nursing teams provide dignified, discreet care with the utmost sensitivity.
