The season's most beautiful exhibitions

This autumn brings several exhibitions that linger long after you leave:

• At the British Museum, this year's blockbuster is the Bayeux Tapestry, a work that carries the weight of centuries. There are many fascinating stories to discover around it, among them the Women of the Bayeux Tapestry, and "The Other Harold", Harald Hardrada, one of 1066's most remarkable figures whose absence from the tapestry is quite striking.
• For those who long for a little escape, the Royal Academy opens "Painting the French Riviera" on 2 October. You may also hear from the curator herself, Ann Dumas, as she explores how the French Riviera supported the rise of modern art, and later became a travel destination and film location that epitomised mid-century sophistication.
• Later in the month, the Royal Academy turns its attention to the significant impact of patron and collector Peggy Guggenheim, whose 1938 Mayfair gallery once shocked contemporary audiences.
• To close the season in style, the National Gallery presents a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition of masterpieces by Van Eyck. For the very first time in history, all of the artist's portraits will be gathered together in "Van Eyck: The Portraits". It is a rare  thing to witness and a show not to be missed.

Art fairs to explore at your own pace

For those who delight in seeing art and design gathered together, three fairs this October reward an unhurried wander:

• Frieze Masters returns to Regent's Park from 14 to 18 October. It spans ancient civilizations, Old Master paintings, sculpture and decorative arts, works on paper, modern British and postwar art, the historical arts of Asia, and reassessed voices from the 20th century.
• If you would prefer something on a gentler scale, this year sees the launch of "Fair Play", a satellite show bringing 70 independent artists to One Marylebone.
• For those whose passion is design, PAD has become a cherished mainstay in Berkeley Square, running from 13 to 18 October.

Conversations with artists, critics, and curators

There is a special pleasure in hearing directly from the people who devote their lives to art, and this autumn offers several such moments to treasure. On the evening of Thursday 8 October, from 7:30pm to 9pm, the critic, author, and art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon shares his revolutionary new theory about Vermeer in "Unveiling Vermeer: The Man and his Masterpieces".

On 15 October, the artist Grayson Perry joins curator Iris Moon to reflect on "Ceramics Past and Present", as part of the Frieze Masters Talks. Later, on 28 October, the celebrated artist Lubaina Himid speaks about representing Britain at this year's Venice Biennale, in conversation at the Royal Academy.
